MURDERER Jack Harrison Vincent Sadler, who killed and then dismembered his friend’s body in a brutal manner, is appealing his 32-year sentence claiming it was manifestly excessive.

A jury in May found Sadler guilty of the murder in a unanimous verdict.

The appeal will go before the Court of Criminal Appeal and he is not appealing the murder conviction.

Sadler, 29, shot Jake Anderson-Brettner, 24, at least three times at close range on August 15, 2018 in a room of his home in the Launceston suburb of Riverside that he had lined in plastic in preparation for the killing.

He then used a knife and axe to cut off Mr Anderson-Brettner’s arms, legs and head.

Sadler and his then girlfriend Gemma Clark dumped Mr Anderson-Brettner’s torso off an embankment in area known as the Sideling and disposed of the other body parts in wheelie bins around the Launceston area.

In sentencing, Justice Robert Pearce said it was a planned, intentional, execution-style killing and Sadler had shown no remorse.

“Mr Anderson-Brettner was not only intentionally killed in a calculating and cruel way, but his body was then subjected to gross indignity,” Justice Pearce said.

“The crime is very significantly aggravated by the mutilation and disposal of the body, all of which is to be regarded by members of a civilised society as abhorrent.”

The sentence was backdated to August 18, 2018, with Sadler eligible for parole after serving 20 years.

He had pleaded not guilty to the murder claiming Mr Anderson-Brettner had been killed by Victorian drug dealers angered over a debt.
