The Tasmania JackJumpers are a step closer to building their new $15m headquarters after plans for the champion team’s high performance centre were lodged with the Kingborough Council.

Fresh off their first NBL title, the Jackies are preparing to move into a state-of-the-art 3365 sq/m facility at 10 Kingston View Drive in the Kingborough Sports Precinct.

A development application for the highly anticipated project was advertised by the local council on Wednesday and it’s hoped the JackJumpers can obtain planning approval before Christmas.

It comes a day after the state government announced that the Tasmania Devils AFL and AFLW teams would also call Kingborough home, with their own high performance centre set to be co-located at the Twin Ovals in the same precinct.

As part of the planning process, the JackJumpers have released a ‘fly-through’ video of their proposed new home, providing a conceptual glimpse of its two basketball courts, recovery rooms, change rooms, offices and administration facilities.

The high performance centre will serve both the JackJumpers men’s side and a possible future WNBL expansion team.

It would be located on land currently occupied by the Hobart Radio Control Car Club. The Kingborough Council recently voted unanimously to transfer ownership of the land to the state government in order to allow the JackJumpers development to go ahead.

Frazer Read, principal of All Urban Planning, which was commissioned by the State Growth Department to prepare a planning application for the high performance centre, said the development would also include medical and physiotherapy facilities, players’ lounges, a merchandise shop, and meeting rooms.

“The project will look to further enhance the area as an engaging sports hub forging strong connections to existing community infrastructure within the area,” he said.

The development will also comprise 37 carparking spaces, accessed via Twin Ovals Rd.

It will typically operate between the hours of 9am and 5pm, seven days a week, but council approval is being sought for flexible use of the centre between 7am and 10pm.

JackJumpers chief executive Christine Finnegan said on Tuesday that the co-location of the team’s proposed headquarters with the Tasmania Devils’ own high performance centre would present opportunities for the two clubs to feed off each other’s energy and success.

“When you’ve got two centres of professional sporting bodies in very close proximity to each other, it creates some great excitement in the community,” she said.

“And when you think about putting the two clubs together, the sky’s the limit in terms of what’s possible.”

Sports and Events Minister Nick Duigan said the high performance centre would become “the heart of the JackJumpers’ operations, serving as the home of the entire club”.

“This site will create further opportunities for our young basketballers and provide development pathways for the next generation,” he said.

“It will also enhance the broader Kingborough Sports Precinct as a premier hub for sport and recreation in the state, with yesterday’s announcement the adjacent site has been locked in for the Tasmania Devils’ high performance centre, too.”
