It could be a long wait for Tasmanians to be able to access digital driver’s licences on their phones, as other Australian states make the switch.
Victoria is the latest state to run a trial of the technology, expanding its scheme after running a six month trial with Ballarat drivers.
In May the trial will be extended to include more than 4.5m fully licensed Victorian drivers.
A spokesperson from the Tasmanian Department of State Growth said it was also exploring the option for digital driver’s licences, but it may be some time before it’s available.
“The development and implementation of digital driver’s licences requires significant investment and change, so we want to ensure we take the time to get it right for Tasmania,” they said.
Victoria will join NSW, Queensland and South Australia with the technology.
It means Tasmania can look to other states for the technology.
“We have been engaged with other states and territories on their digital framework to assess the benefits and to assist in our development,” the spokesperson said.
“Any digital identification must be accessible and inclusive, as well enhance an individual’s ability to protect their identity.
“It will also need to conform with international ISO standards to ensure the integrity, interoperability and authenticity of a digital driver’s licence.”
