The numbers have been crunched revealing the unluckiest suburbs with the highest volume of Covid-exposure sites so far this December.

While flights bear the brunt of snowballing Covid exposure zones, many bars, gyms, markets and petrol stations dotted about Tasmania have combined in a list of areas to assist contact tracing efforts.

The climbing tally is expected to stall, however, as the definitions of close contact and casual contact sites have been relaxed and the government has dropped low-risk and casual sites from the list going forward.

This considered, figures may be skewed to reflect sites of varying risk, while other suburbs may be over-represented by the listing of the same venue multiple times.

An example of this is Priceline in Channel Court, Kingston, which was listed as a low risk site three times from 9am-5pm over December 22-24.

The below list reveals which suburbs have been the least lucky for Covid exposure, not including aeroplanes and the Spirit of Tasmania.

The most recent exposure date in the list relates to two flights on Tuesday, while other recent exposures include Party in the Apocalypse which was a low-risk site on Monday from 5.30-10.30pm and Moonah Zap Gym which was a close contact site on Christmas Day from 3-5pm.

Launceston

Exposure sites in the city of Launceston have been listed 62 times on the Health website, not including flights.

The bulk of the list comprises of areas at the airport, which are listed 12 times for being exposure sites at various times through December.

Other areas that have faced a Covid scare at some point or other include Harvest Market, Avenue Records, Howick St McDonalds, Fitzpatrick’s Pharmacy and Barbecues Galore.

The only close contacts on the list are JJ’s City Cafe, LIFT Gym, Black Cow Bistro, Geronimo Aperitivo Bar and Restaurant and Cafe Mojo.

All of these sites are now safe to enter.

Cambridge

The second most named suburb on the list is Cambridge with 19 appearances.

But locals in the area can be assured their local shops and venues have been safe from harm since borders opened on December 15.

Hobart International Airport is the only site in the suburb to be listed, with the airport exposed 19 times to coronavirus.

Every instance of exposure was low risk apart from one casual contact listing on the morning of December 15 at the baggage area.

The airport has not been listed as a low-risk exposure site since December 27.

Hobart

The capital of Tasmania has been named 16 times on the Health list.

Discounting flights, some venues are listed multiple times, including In The Hanging Garden, the breakfast buffet at Crowne Plaza and Pablo’s.

Pablo’s and Hanging Garden were close contact sites, as was Danphe Restaurant, F45 Training and the lower floor of Ball and Chain Grill.

All sites are now safe to enter.

Devonport

Only Zap Fitness in Devonport has previously been listed as a close contact site, with the rest consisting of casual and low risk zones.

Devonport has been included ten times, not including Spirit of Tasmania listings, for exposure to coronavirus.

The McDonalds toilet and coffee shop on Best Street and Alex Bottle Shop were casual sites, while places like Hill Street Grocer, Woolworths, Bunnings, Terry White Chemmart and No Frills Foodmarket were among low-risk sites.

Each highlighted spot is now safe to visit.

Kingston

Beyond major cities and suburbs with airports, Kingston is the next most exposure-prone locale with seven inclusions.

Liv-Eat and Zap Fitness were close contact spots on December 23.

Low-risk listings were Priceline and Robbo’s Chicken and Meat.

The shops no longer pose a threat and are safe to attend.

Sorell

Locals will be relieved to learn that although Sorell has recorded a decent share of sites, all of them were low-risk.

Sorell made the list six times from December 17-19.

Low-risk sites, which are now safe to enter, included Sorell Plaza Coles, Sorell Berry Farm, Sorell Country Fresh Market, B Bakers and Baristas, 9/11 Bottleshop and Rural Solutions Tasmania.

Moonah

Hobart City Mission comprises three of the five Moonah listings.

The clothing shop was casual and low-risk on December 17.

Two close contact sites were Rebel At Heart Hair Boutique and Zap Gym Moonah, with both areas now safe for customers and staff to attend.

New Town and Bicheno

This southern suburb and East Coast town were listed four times each for exposure to the virus.

Buckingham RC Boat Shed remains the only affected New Town site, listed as a close contact area across December 22 and 23.

Bicheno Market, IGA and Log Cabin General Store were low-risk sites and Islander At and Home Fashion was a casual zone.

All areas are safe to visit.

Cradle Mountain, Elizabeth Town and Sandy Bay

These far-reaching areas have three exposure sites each.

These include a shuttle bus and information centre in the remote locale of Cradle Mountain, Ashgrove Cheese Factory and Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm in Elizabeth Town and Sisterhood Cafe and Wrest Point Hotel Gym and Sauna in Sandy Bay.

Each Sandy Bay site and Elizabeth Town site had been categorised as close-contact, but all areas are safe to enter.

Huonville, Invermay, Smithton, St Helens

These four suburbs have been listed twice each.

Invermay’s Mayven Dental was a close contact site, as was Hugos Brew and Chew in Smithton.

No exposure sites in these suburbs remain a threat to public health.

Other minor affected suburbs

The following areas have one exposure site per suburb: Battery Point, Bellerive, Berriedale, Breadalbane, Evandale, Exeter, Franklin, Glenorchy, Mole Creek, Mowbray, Nabowla, Orford, Prospect Vale, Rosevears, Rosny, Shearwater, South Launceston, Stanley, Turners Beach, Ulverstone.

Trending business structures

It appears gyms, berry farms, grocery stores and markets are among the most frequently listed types of businesses on the state’s exposure site list.
