A female staff member at a Tasmanian Catholic high school has been charged by police over an alleged sexual assault of a minor.

Tasmania Police confirmed a 43-year-old Devonport woman was charged with one count of Penetrative Abuse of a Young Person following an alleged incident on March 20 in the north-west.

A statement from Catholic Education Tasmania said they became aware of “concerning stories circulating” about “an incident” in northwest Tasmania earlier this month allegedly involving a staff member of St Brendan-Shaw College.

“The College followed protocol and promptly contacted Tasmania Police,” the statement read.

“The staff member has not been working at the College since the allegations were raised, and has been formally stood down as a result of a police investigation.

“Consumer, Building and Occupational Services have been contacted in relation to the staff member’s Working with Vulnerable People registration.

“St Brendon-Shaw College has notified parents and the school community, and is offering counselling to staff, students and their families as part of its pastoral response.”

The woman is due to appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court on June 8.
