When 16-year-old Spencer Connelly was told he would be getting a tour of the new Mad Max film set, he never expected to get an opportunity to have a speaking role in it.
The Devonport teenager plays Rakka the Brackish, one of the many “war boys” in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The film is the franchise’s fifth instalment and serves as a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
Connelly said on social media that being part of the film was a life-changing experience.
“I walked onto set, knowing no one. I came off set with some of the most amazing friends I could have ever asked for.
“I originally was only meant to get a tour of the sets, which then turned into an extra’s role. “George Miller [the film’s director] thought that I deserved a chance to audition for a casting role.
“So I auditioned, and I got the part.”
Connelly said he had learned much from filming and was keen to do more professional acting roles.
In 2012, when Spencer and his brother Fletcher were five and nine respectively, they were victims of a car fire that left the pair with severe burns.
Since then, the brothers have been part of the KIDS Foundation, a charity that provides support to traumatised children.
It was through that organisation that Spencer got his film role.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released in cinemas on May 17.
