A waste centre in Hobart has been given a $9m facelift.
The newly redeveloped Lutana Resource Recovery Centre, run by Southern Waste Solutions (SWS), was unveiled to the public on Friday.
SWS Board Chair Christine Mucha said the upgraded facility “marks a turning point for more sustainable waste management in Tasmania”.
“The entirely new and purpose-built facility unlocks our capability to separate potentially valuable materials from the waste stream, including timber, building rubble, cardboard, mattresses, hard plastics and e-waste,” Dr Mucha said.
“That gives us the opportunity to not only reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill but unlock new economic opportunities from the things we used to discard.
“Right now, a typical skip bin of building waste from a construction site is worthless – in fact, it costs money to throw away.
“SWS aims to begin recovering over 50 per cent of this construction material to re-purpose and present it to new markets.
“With a mix of education and incentives, we see the opportunity for customers to sort material at the source, creating a clean stream of recoverable material which helps them minimise landfilling costs, at the same time as supplying potential new markets.”
SWS CEO Nick Gifford said the company was focused on leading the transformation of waste management in Tasmania.
“The completion of the redevelopment marks a significant step in our commitment to being the most advanced waste management and resource recovery operation in Tasmania,” Mr Gifford said.
“The 1980m2 structure with three sorting bays will greatly improve the efficiency of our operations while also allowing us to further reduce our impact on commercial and residential neighbours.
“95 per cent of waste handling and bulk-up operations are now conducted in an enclosed, safe and controlled facility where we can better manage our impact to the community and the environment.
“Our redevelopment incorporates a state-of-the-art ventilation system and advanced closed-loop leachate recovery system, mitigating site run-off and ensuring we maintain the highest level of environmental stewardship”.
SWS’s Lutana Waste Transfer Centre manages 60,000 tonnes of waste annually from across the state.
