Southern lights put on a spectacular show over Clifton Beach

A videographer has captured a stunning time-lapse video of an aurora australis over a Tasmanian beach. SEE THE VIDEO

THE aurora australis, or southern lights, illuminated the night sky over South Arm on the night of September 28.

Videographer Justin McConnell recorded this time-lapse video from a lookout point at Clifton Beach, southeast of Hobart.

Visible in the video are the yellow and pink lights of the phenomenon, as well as flashes of green.

McConnell told Storyful that he formed the time-lapse from 220 photos taken between 7.30pm and 9.45pm. He edited the images by “adding contrast and vibrance” as well as “enhancing shadows”.

McConnell said he was unsure about the source of a flash at the right of the video after about 10 seconds.

“I’m not sure what the flare-up is. I think it was just someone’s house light,” he said.

A red light also appears after about 15 seconds from the flashlight of beachgoers visiting the lookout.

HOW DOES TIME-LAPSE WORK?

Time-lapse captures video at a very low frame rate, usually around one to two frames a second, although this depends on the length of the recording. When played back, the video becomes the opposite of slow motion.

For the best results you should set your camera up on a tripod, although you can also achieve decent results with a good phone.
