A woman and a primary school aged child — thought to be returning home after school pick-up — have been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the Bass Highway at Wynyard.
Acting inspector Tony Stewart said it appears an unladen sewerage carrier heading towards Smithton had collided with the woman’s car as she travelled east.
That car has then collided with a stationary vehicle ready to turn into Deep Creek Rd.
The occupants of the stationary vehicle have also been taken to the North West Regional Hospital as a precaution.
Acting inspector Stewart said all drivers would be tested to see if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
He said early investigations showed speed was not a factor in the crash.
Police and emergency services remain on the scene, with the road blocked between Reservoir Drive and Wilkinson Street.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area and anticipate delays in Wynyard due to traffic congestion.
