SECRETS of the deep will be unlocked at a marine discovery weekend on Tasmania’s East Coast.

From rock pool scrambling to sustainable fishing tips, the event promises a salty something for everyone.

Environment Tasmania is staging its third Marine Discovery event in and around St Helens on November 15-16.

The aim is to promote Tasmania’s marine and coastal environments.

Environment Tasmania marine co-ordinator Rebecca Hubbard said St Helens was the perfect gateway to the picturesque Bay of Fires.

“This area is home to unique marine life and settled on a backdrop of beautiful white sandy beaches, orange lichen and turquoise blue water,” she said.

“However, Tasmania’s cold water sometimes makes it harder for people to access this environment or they don’t have the gear and knowledge to do it.”

She said the St Helens Marine Discovery Event would “take the community beneath the waves to discover this unique underwater environment — what is there, how it is special, and why it is important”.
