The race to find additional locations for the historic announcement of Tasmania’s long-awaited AFL and AFLW teams is over, with almost 20 clubs and pubs across the state agreeing to host “community launch parties” on 18 March.

Tasmanian footy fans demanded greater access to the livestreamed event, after the Theatre Royal sold out in just three minutes when Launch Event tickets went online earlier this week.

Queenstown remains the only one of six original Launch Event sites across the state with limited ticket availability, as Launceston’s UTAS Stadium, Devonport’s Paranaple convention centre, the Oatlands RSL, and the St Helens football club also selling out.

Executive director Kath McCann said the Tasmania Football Club wanted as many Tasmanians as possible to experience the historic event, which will include the unveiling of the club colours, name, logo, and foundation jumper.

“As the Club explored alternative venues to meet ticket demand, it became clear some community clubs were already mobilising to host their own events,” Ms McCann said.

“Given this, we switched our focus to supporting those community clubs and others to have it celebrated via livestream at community venues.

“Clubs Tasmania have been instrumental in ensuring we connect with interested clubs and pubs; to provide support and ensure they are set up for the night but also in sharing our appreciation.

“The Club is extremely grateful for the Tasmanian community’s support shown towards our launch.”

In addition to the 18 new sites, Clarence City Council will also host a live event in Rosny’s Charles Hand Memorial Park.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley said his council was thrilled to offer more football lovers the opportunity to witness what promises to be a special moment in Tasmania’s sporting history.

“This is a momentous occasion, and it is very fitting that we can bring the announcement to the community from below where the community oval of the High Performance Centre is planned to be located,” Mr Blomeley said.

Mr Blomeley said those attending the Rosny event were encouraged to bring picnic rugs and fold-out seating.

While some food and drink will be available, attendees may bring their own food and drink to the event.
