A MUCH-admired historic property in Hobart has been sold for a record price as the city’s real estate market continues to gather pace.

Lyndhurst, in North Hobart, has been sold by owners Derek and Hellen Chambers, pictured, to a large family who plan to retain it as a family residence.

Harcourts Hobart agent Rod McMahon said the undisclosed sale price was the highest for any stand alone residential property north of the Hobart CBD. It had been listed for $3 million.

It is also the sixth biggest sale for a free-standing residential home in all of Hobart.

Mr McMahon said the sheer size of Lyndhurst was the major impediment for many prospective purchasers because it was simply too big.

With a floor space of 1007 metres square, is almost 10 times the size of an average Tasmanian suburban home.

For the new owners, the size was just right.

“These people came through and they wanted to make an offer on the spot,” Mr McMahon said.

He said interest in the sale had come from as far afield as Hong Kong.

Derek and Hellen Chambers have owned the property since 2002 and have undertaken extensive renovations during that time.

The empty nesters said they were both happy and sad to finally sell their home.

“We just have to remind ourselves of all the things we want to do,” Hellen said. “Now we’ve only got one son that lives with us part-time, so it’s much too big but it’s been fantastic living here.”

The Chambers have five months before settlement and plan to have at least one major auction of the many antiques and collectables in the home.

“We have put all the history back together and certain things that belonged to the house we’ve bought back and they’ll stay with the house,” Mr Chambers said.

The house has nine bedrooms, five bathrooms, formal dining and breakfast rooms, a Huon pine kitchen, entertainment room with bar, indoor heated pool and spa, and private courtyard – set on just over half a hectare of land.

The house was built in 1880 by Charles Davies, son of Mercury newspaper founder John Davies.
