A Tasmanian male prisoner has died overnight, the director of prisons has revealed.
The department of justice released a statement before midday confirming the death but the circumstances around it have not been provided.
“On behalf of the Tasmania Prison Service I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased man at this difficult time,” Prisons director Ian Thomas said.
“The Tasmania Prison Service will not be making any further comment as the matter is now the subject of an examination by the Coroner.”
Mr Thomas said this was standard practice for deaths in a corrections environment.
