Police rescue 72-year-old Tunnack man from overturned boat at Dolphin Sands

Tasmanian Police have saved a Southern Midlands man from an overturned boat in a dramatic rescue.

TASMANIA Police say a Tunnack man is lucky to be alive after he was rescued from an overturned boat at Dolphin Sands.

Emergency services were alerted to the boat in danger in Great Oyster Bay by a nearby resident about 1.30pm on Saturday.

Three men were fishing in the 5-metre fibreglass boat when it got caught in the surf and flipped. Two men were thrown from the boat and a third man was trapped underneath.

The 72-year-old was trapped for 30 minutes while police from Marine and Rescue Services and Swansea station broke through the bottom of the boat with a hand tool and pulled him to safety.

He was treated on scene for exposure to gases and water inhalation before being flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a stable condition.

None of his injuries were considered life threatening.

The other two men were assessed by ambulance officers at the scene and have no physical injuries.

TFS firefighters, volunteers from Ambulance Tasmania, SES and Swansea Surf Life Saving were also on scene assisting.
