THE Taste of Tasmania as we know it is not going ahead this summer — but wheels are in motion for a Taste-style event to run in its place.
The State Government and Hobart City Council are seeking submissions from experienced event organisers to run a new end-of-year food and drink celebration.
It comes after the council in May decided the Taste of Tasmania would not proceed in its usual format because of coronavirus, but said a smaller event could, subject to restrictions.
Premier Peter Gutwein said ideas were being sought for a “uniquely Tasmanian” event that would support the state’s producers and suppliers and reinvigorate Hobart.
“COVID-19 has challenged us in so many ways, but it also means we have to challenge our thinking on how to respond,’’ he said.
“Hospitality and events are key economic drivers, and so we are looking at identifying truly Tasmanian concepts that we can turn into reality, that will help reinvigorate Hobart and celebrate the quintessential produce we are so very proud of.”
The concept process would offer event organisers the opportunity to build on one of Tasmania’s most iconic events, Minister for Small Business, Hospitality and Events Sarah Courtney said.
“We are world renowned for offering some of the most innovative and bespoke event experiences, and I look forward to seeing the creative concepts that will be put forward as part of the submission process,’’ she said.
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the City of Hobart was working closely with government to deliver an event that would celebrate Tasmanian food and drink, the end of the year, and the strong community spirit in Hobart.
“This year is probably the most challenging that many of us have experienced,” she said. “We are hopeful this submission process will draw out some exciting and innovative ideas for a fitting celebration on Hobart’s waterfront.
“Coming together at the end of the year to celebrate our wonderful local Tasmanian fare will be an important step in our community’s recovery.”
Submissions close on July 31.
