MORE than 1000 concerned Eastern Shore residents have signed a petition demanding the Clarence City Council hold a public meeting over the Rosny Hill Hotel development.

Alderman Richard James tabled the petition with 1207 signatures at a council meeting on Monday and said the community request for a meeting about the development was “fair and reasonable”.

The petition calls on the council to hold a public meeting about the Rosny Hill Hotel, a five-star, 100-room development, featuring 82 rooms within a two-storey building that wraps around the hill.

A development application is before the council from developer Hunter Developments.

The petition was organised by community group Rosny Hill Friends Network, which has a number of concerns about the development.

Spokeswoman Jo Castillo said the group felt compelled to act because there had been a lack of information from the council about the plans.

She said under the Local Government Act 1993, sections 57-59, if a petition with more than 1000 signatures was presented to the council it could be forced to hold a public meeting.

Clarence Mayor Doug Chipman said the council had every intention of being as open and consultative as possible but he did not confirm if a public meeting on the matter would be held.

“We have received the petition and we will respond to it at the next council meeting or the one after that,” he said.
