Peter Ridler will make his return to the Glenorchy City Council after he was elected on a recount on Monday.
The recount was held after the passing of alderman and former federal MP Harry Quick, who died of cancer last month.
Mr Quick, aged 83, was remembered as a “a man of the people, after spending years in politics and on council.
There were eight candidates who nominated for the recount, and in the contest to replace Mr Quick, the last two standing were Mr Ridler, who received 812.51 votes and former Glenorchy business owner Aris Grafanakis, who finished with 720.37 votes.
Mr Ridler is a familiar face on the council, after spending more than 20 years on the council, from 1987 until 2014, when he was not re-elected.
Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey congratulated Mr Ridler.
“I welcome Mr Ridler to Glenorchy City Council and look forward to his contributions
representing his constituents and the ratepayers of our municipal area,” she said.
A recount was also held to elect a new member to the Tasman Council, after the resignation of councillor Daniel Kelleher on October 28.
Alan John Hull was elected unopposed to fill the vacancy, as he was the only candidate to nominate for the recount.
Both Mr Ridler and Mr Hull will serve until the 2026 local government elections.
