Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong says Tasmania producers will be better off under trade policies being championed by the Albanese government.
In Hobart to officially launch member for Franklin Julie Collins’ campaign, Senator Wong said improved trade relations benefited exporters, such as Tasmania’s agricultural sector.
“After years of recklessness under the Liberals, the Albanese Labor Government is providing steady leadership through these uncertain times,” she said on Wednesday.
“We have rebuilt relationships with Australia’s trading partners, opening doors for Australian exports.
“Labor has secured new markets, strengthened existing ties and removed more than $20bn in trade barriers that the Liberals left behind.
“A re-elected Albanese Labor Government will continue to build Australia’s future by backing our world-class farmers and producers.”
Australia exports 70 per cent of the value of our agricultural, fisheries and forestry production to around 169 markets globally.
The Albanese government has claimed credit for opening up Middle East markets through the United Arab Emirates and for boosting exports of Australian beef and red meat, expanding trade with the UK, European Union, and Indonesia.
And the restoration of the trade relationship with China has removed more than $20bn in trade impediments including live rock lobster exports — a win for Tasmanian fishers.
As Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Ms Collins said Tasmanian producers would benefit from reducing trade obstacles.
“The world wants our produce, and Labor is laser focused on ensuring that Australia can take advantage of these opportunities,” she said.
“A re-elected Albanese Labor Government will work hard to ensure we get the best results for Australia’s farmers, without sacrificing what makes our produce some of the most sought after in the world.
“To Tasmanian farmers, fishers and producers, I say – Labor has your back.”
