When Matt and Justin Duncombe’s mother Janine was diagnosed with breast cancer, the brothers knew they wanted to do something to raise much-needed funds and awareness.
More than 10 years on, Pedal4Pink has been held annually.
This year the event, held at Southern City BMX in Hobart, attracted dozens of eager riders from age two to 66 – all donning colourful pink outfits in the name of cancer awareness.
Matt Duncombe said after brainstorming the event with Justin, they knew it was the right thing to do.
“Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it was the early stages and was caught in time, but Justin and I decided we wanted to do something to help with research,” he said.
“We thought, ‘well, there’s other people out there being affected just as badly’, so we wanted to help out and so we approached the club committee and said we wanted to hold a race meet to raise money and donate it.”
The entry fee for the BMX races, canteen revenue, and raffle ticket money, as well as other donations, has in some years tipped the donations to $3k – all of which is donated to Cancer Council Tasmania.
Matt said it was great to see so many people participate and donate.
“Because you just never know when (cancer) can happen,” he said.
“It can happen to any woman in your life, at any age.”
