SNOW has blanketed parts of the state this morning in stark contrast to this time last week when Hobartians sweltered through two days over 30C.

Visitors at the Great Lake Hotel in the Central Highlands woke to find themselves surrounded by snow.

Temperatures at nearby Liawenee dropped to -1.6C at about 6.30am.

A severe weather warning is current for damaging west to north-westerly winds

over the south today, reaching up to 100km/h.

The winds are expected to peak between 10am and 4pm before easing this evening.

Thunderstorms with small hail are possible about the west and far south until this evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology has also forecast 15–25mm of rainfall in the west and far south and up to around 5mm elsewhere.

Snowfalls down to 700 metres are expected today, but will drop even lower tomorrow to around 500m.

This time last week a 48-hour total fire ban was declared in the state’s South and East as temperatures soared into the low 30s.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts a showery top of 14C for Hobart on Friday and 15C for Saturday, well below the 19C November average.

Bureau forecaster Matthew Thomas said Tasmania was experiencing a “transitional period” between spring and summer.

“Tasmania is in an area where the rest of the country is seeing warmth and below us is obviously very cold, which tends to make for changeable weather,” he said.

“But it’s by no means unusual to see the weather go hot then cold at this time of year.”
