Parliamentary expenses disclosure reveals our biggest-spending MPs

Tasmania’s federal politicians ran up $1.5m worth of expenses in the first quarter of 2023, according to new figures. Here’s who spend the most + The MP who spent thousands on a trip to Fiji.

Tasmania’s federal politicians ran up $1.5m worth of expenses in the first quarter of 2023, according to figures released by the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority (IPEA).

The IPEA has released details of federal parliamentarian’s expenses claims for the period 1 January to 31 March 2023.

Minister for Housing, Homelessness and Small Business Julie Collins had the highest expenses for the quarter, with a total of $191,224, followed by Liberal backbencher Bridget Archer, with $119,375.

Ms Collin’s total included $91,622 worth of staff travel.

Greens Senators Nick McKim and Peter Whish-Wilson had the lowest expenses, at $56,903 and $55,611.

Senator Jacqui Lambie ran up the most travel expenses, claiming $9680 for 31 nights on which she was carrying out her parliamentary duties.

Mrs Archer spent $8237 on international travel as part of the eight-day Parliamentary Delegation to the 30th Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum and Senator Claire Chandler spent $5442 on a week-long trip, to observe Fiji’s national election.

Ms Archer’s office was the most expensive to run over the period, spending $48,663 in three months on “office administration” including claims for nearly $13,000 in printing and communications on New Year’s Day 2023 and $1,300 for flags in February 2023.

Senator Jonathan Duniam’s office, the most frugal, ran up $3717 over the same period.

Ms Archer also recorded the highest total for family travel costs over the period, with claims totalling $3161 for flights between Launceston and Canberra.
