Serious motorcycle crash

A Claremont man has died at the scene of a motorbike crash in Hobart’s northern suburbs, despite efforts by ambulance officers and bystanders to save his life.

Emergency services were called to Osprey Road, Claremont on Thursday just after 5.30pm after reports of a motorbike crash.

Tasmania Police said the 33-year-old man from the died at the scene despite efforts from members of the public and Ambulance Tasmania.

The area was closed off for a period of time while forensic units examined the scene.

Police said there is no suggestion that any other vehicle or persons were involved, but the incident remains under investigation.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

P-Plater caught speeding, Spreyton

Tasmania Police has condemned a P-plater’s ‘dangerous’ driving after he was caught speeding 70km/h over the speed limit at Spreyton on Sunday.

The Legana man was riding a Honda motorcycle when he was intercepted by a Stinger highway patrol vehicle for travelling 150km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The 27-year-old was found to be a P1 licence holder with an 80km/h speed restriction.

The offender had his motorcycle confiscated and is expected to face court over the incident.

Following a spate of fatalities over the last few months, Inspector Gary Williams called on Tasmanians to slow down.

“We know that speeding kills, and it’s this sort of disregard for the road rules that puts lives on the line.” he said.

“Remember that driving even a few kms over the speed limit is over. Over is Over.”

House fire, Bridgewater

Thursday, March 7

Tasmania Police are investigating a suspicious fire that damaged a home in Bridgewater on Wednesday night.

Emergency services were called to 52 Cowle Road around 8pm to find smoke billowing from a home.

Tasmania Fire Service put out the blaze a short time later.

The home received minor smoke and water damage.

Anyone with information in relation to the fire is asked to contact police on 131444 or crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Power outage, Hobart

8:30am Wednesday March 6

Power has been restored to all customers affected by the outage in Battery Point, Sandy Bay and Hobart.

TasNetworks said the outage was caused by a private infrastructure fault.

6am Wednesday, March 6

1354 buildings are without power in the Hobart CBD this morning.

The outage is affecting customers in Battery Point, Sandy Bay and Hobart with the entire Salamanca Square without electricity including the Mercury building and Banjos.

TasNetworks said crews are investigating the cause and an estimated restoration time is to be advised.
