OPERATORS of the Tahune Airwalk, near Geeveston, will not need to rebuild the airwalk structure and remain hopeful the site will be open by the end of the year.
The major tourist attraction in the Huon Valley was badly damaged in January when fires swept through the region, and it has since remained closed to the public.
Sustainable Timber Tasmania and Tahune Airwalk Adventures said they were working together to get the site operational.
“An engineering inspection revealed the Airwalk structure does not need to be rebuilt but repair work will include replacement of guywire ropes and associated hardware, detailed inspection, bolt tightening, repainting and replacement of other elements of the infrastructure,” a Sustainable Timber Tasmania spokesman said.
“The entry and exit structures need to be rebuilt, along with some walking track repairs. These works have commenced.”
For the past few months, arborists have been working to make the site safe and developing the rehabilitation and restoration plan.
“It is very positive to see the forests recovering and regrowing within the site and the surrounding areas,” the spokesman said.
“Further updates regarding an opening date will be made once significant progress has occurred with the repair works.”
