A PERSON was killed and at least one other injured in a crash on the Midland Highway near Oatlands yesterday.
Police said the crash, involving a number of vehicles, happened in wet and slippery conditions at Spring Hill about 3.30pm.
A large section of the Midland Highway was blocked for several hours while emergency crews worked to save the injured and police investigated the cause.
Witnesses at the scene said two cars heading in opposite directions collided and a woman was trapped inside one of the vehicles, a silver hatchback, until rescue crews arrived.
Southbound traffic was diverted at Mudwalls Rd and northbound traffic at Lovely Banks Rd, causing lengthy delays.
The Tasmania Police Facebook post about the incident prompted calls for better ambulance services in country areas and a fixed speed camera on the north-south highway.
A woman who said she arrived at the scene just after the crash praised motorists who tried to help the injured and others who diverted traffic before emergency workers arrived.
