A new $400 million electrolysis plant at the Hobart zinc works is a step closer to being built after the owner finalised grant deeds with the federal and state governments.

Nyrstar Hobart general manager Todd Milne has told the 600 staff working at the site that the massive project could now “get under way”.

“Getting to this point is the result of a lot of work from many people across our Nyrstar Australia operations over the past three years and I want to thank all of you who have been involved,” he wrote in a memo sent to workers on Tuesday.

“The broad support for this major project should give us all confidence in a strong future for our Hobart site.

“It also reflects our contribution to jobs and the economy in Tasmania, and also the increasing recognition of our sustainability credentials and zinc’s important role in the world’s low carbon transition.”

Mr Milne said construction would formally begin “in coming months”.

“Practically, our project team are continuing to work on key activities. The current focus is on finalising design work and early planning,” he wrote.

“The main on-ground work you can expect to see this year is construction of the new road up to the Casting Department.”

The Albanese government has committed $50m to the project, known as the cell house, while the Rockliff government will provide $20m in funding support.

Nyrstar has secured planning approvals for the new facility from the Glenorchy City Council.

The zinc works, located at Lutana, has been in operation since 1916.
