An aurora was spotted as far south as Antarctica up to New South Wales — but it was perhaps Northern Tasmanians with the best view.

Images of the dazzling event have flooded social media with many of those spotting the Aurora Australis in the state’s north.

Aurora hunters in the state’s south caught a glimpse of the southern lights, but were largely left disappointed after cloud cover dulled the magic.

The geomagnetic storm responsible for the aurora is expected to last a few days, with the Bureau of Meteorology saying an aurora may be observed during local night time hours in good observing conditions at high latitudes.
