CONSTRUCTION is due to begin in January at the site of a private hospital in New Town.

The $60 million Tasman Private Hospital received final approval from Hobart City Council in March 2021.

However work is yet to begin at the vacant site of the former Win TV studios on New Town Rd.

A letter to local residents on August 5 said demolition of the existing buildings was due to begin in October.

The letter signed by Nexus CEO Andrew Petering said since the project’s approval, the company had been in the process of finalising detailed design.

The construction phase is expected to take around two years.

“In the next few weeks you will notice some activity commencing on site, including the construction of fences to secure the site. This will enable us to undertake a number of preliminary works over the next few months, prior to the main construction works commencing in January next year. We anticipate that some early works activities including demolition of the existing building will take place during September/October this year. We currently anticipate the building will be completed by December 2024,” the letter said.

The project initially submitted to council in 2019 prompted strong opposition from some nearby residents who were unhappy with the development’s size and location.

The hospital was knocked back in December that year on the grounds that it would have unreasonable impact on residential amenity.

A second application in 2020 was deferred.

The third iteration, which removed one level of the building from the designs, was given the green light last year.

The development will comprise an integrated medical centre and hospital, including seven operating theatres and a 26 bed overnight ward for in-patient care.

The building will also house a general practice, radiology and pathology services.

The project was backed by Tasmania’s Coordinator General John Perry.
