Two Tasmanian families are celebrating after taking out top prizes in separate lotteries overnight.
A couple from New Town have become overnight millionaires after claiming one of six division one winning entries in Saturday’s TattsLotto draw.
The self-proclaimed ‘battlers’ say they are ‘over the moon’ and are planning to use the windfall to renovate their home, pay off their mortgage and save money for their retirement.
“I was about to start work on Sunday, and I was just sitting in the car when I decided to quickly check our lottery tickets,” said the winning woman.
“I called my husband straight away to tell him. He was still in bed, so I had to wake him up. I said, ‘sit down, I’ve got something to tell you’.”
The pair won a total of $1,012,790.28.
“We never thought something like this would happen to us.”
“We’ve battled all of our lives. We’re hard workers, so this will take the pressure off and allow us to just enjoy our lives.”
In the north of the state it was revealed this morning that another woman scored $10,000 on an Instant Scratch-It.
The Ravenswood local said the $5 ticket was given to her as a gift from her daughter.
“My family and I went on a trip away for two days to celebrate Christmas in July, and my daughter and I gave each other some Instant Scratch-Its tickets,” she explained.
“We all sat down as a family around the table to scratch them. At first, my daughter won $500, and we all got really excited for her.
“It was then my turn to scratch my Instant Scratch-It tickets. I scratched $10,000, and I was shocked! We were all shocked.”
The winning tickets were purchased from Charles Street Central News in Launceston and New Town Plaza Newsagency in Hobart.
