New York: A protected bike lane is planned for Central Park West following the death of Tasmanian woman Madison Lyden

A community board has plans to build a protected bike lane along Central Park West in New York following the death of Tasmanian tourist Madison Jane Lyden in August last year.

A community board has passed a resolution to build a protected bike lane along Central Park West after the death of tourist Ms Lyden in August last year.

DEATH PROMPTS NYC PROTECTED BIKE LANE

Ms Lyden, 23, was riding a bicycle along a painted bike lane when she was struck by a driver in a garbage truck.

The new lane with a 2.1m buffer will run along the east side of Central Park West from 59th St to 110th St, eliminating 400 parking spaces.

City officials said the lane was designed to increase safety for cyclists and pedestrians, although the move has been opposed by some residents.

Construction of the new lane will start in September.
