A new $28m sports centre at Claremont has moved a step closer with the government lodging a development application with the Glenorchy City Council.

Sports Minister Minister, Nick Duigan, said the DA lodgement highlighted the importance of the facility for local athletes and sporting clubs as well as the wider Glenorchy and Hobart communities.

“The Glenorchy Sports Centre is set to be a game-changer for our local sports scene, I look forward to seeing this vision become a reality,” he said.

“With the DA now lodged we are one step closer to delivering a centre that will serve as a vibrant hub for sport, recreation, and the local community.

“This development will introduce four much-needed indoor courts, significantly enhancing the sports infrastructure in the Greater Hobart area.

“It will provide world-class facilities that cater to athletes of all levels and abilities, fostering growth and excellence in sports.”

The centre will be built at Claremont College and accommodate sports including basketball, netball, volleyball, and futsal, change-rooms and amenities for players, visitors, staff and volunteers and a multi-purpose space and carparking.

Mr Duigan said the government was focused on ensuring the centre was delivered as quickly as possible, with construction to begin as soon as approvals were received.

“Our focus is on getting shovels in the ground and delivering a high-quality centre that will be enjoyed for generations to come,” he said.

The development application is expected to be advertised publicly by the Glenorchy City Council in the coming weeks.
