The biggest issues facing Tasmania’s youth have been revealed in a new report.

The Listening to Children and Young People in Tasmania Report 2019, from Commissioner for Children and Young People Leanne McLean, highlighted education, equality, the environment and mental health as some of the key issues facing our youngest Tasmanians.

Ms McLean said the voices of about 200 children and young people involved in the CCYP Ambassador program were compiled for the report, which would help inform advocacy into the future.

“It shines a light on the matters they believe need greater attention by decision-makers,” she said.

“The themes relate to education and opportunities for children and young people, their safety, the natural environment and climate change, their access to basic services and supports, their mental health and the bullying many experience, their ability to participate in their communities and society, and their wish to be recognised as valued members of the Tasmanian community, no matter who they are or where they come from.”

Abbey Maddock, 16, became involved in the Ambassador program because she loved helping people.

“I just love the idea that I can talk about things that concern me or the community, and that they can be heard,” she said.

“It’s really powerful.”

Among those key issues, she said equality and the environment were the two of most importance to her.

“My biggest concern is that we should all be treated equally and without judgment,” she said.

“I also think it’s important to monitor students and how they’re treating each other, to avoid things like bullying.

“Watching out for the environment is also a big one.”

Human Services Minister Roger Jaensch welcomed the report.

“The voices of our young people are important and must be heard, and while this report was done before the COVID-19 pandemic, I can assure all our young people that we hear their concerns and welcome their ideas on key issues,” he said.

Greens leader Cassy O’Connor said listening to children and young people needed to be front and centre as the state began to ease its way out of the coronavirus crisis.

“They are calling out for more mental health support, educational opportunities, equality, but most critical of all, climate action,” she said.

“As we rebuild our social structures, future generations must be front of mind at every step.”
