Tasmanians interested in a career as a police officer are in luck — with a bumper intake planned for the next recruit course.

In her second day on the job, Police Commissioner Donna Adams launched a new TV and social media campaign “This is Tas Police” to help take the numbers of police to record levels.

There are openings for 80 new recruits in the January intake.

Police trainee Zoe Fisher is one of the stars of the campaign, which is aimed to showcase the approachable and authentic people behind the uniform.

She spoke highly of a job that is never the same two days in a row.

“I was fresh out of school and wanted a change,” she said.

“I wasn’t really interested in going to university and I always had a passion for policing. I wanted to join to really help support the community and be involved in the community.

“It’s like working with your family every day. After the course, we’re very close and that’s something that’s really nice to come to work and work alongside your best friends every day.”

Her colleague Raymond Anand said the recruit course had been a terrific learning experience.

“You’re working with different types of people all the time in terms of the community and your work colleagues as well,” he said.

“I like to challenge myself and push myself and learn and grow and I feel I can do that here.
Commissioner Adams said Tasmania police was looking for people of integrity, problem solvers who wanted to serve their community.”

“I want to send a message to all Tasmanians who are looking for a career change and in particular our grade 12 students who are about to finish school and our university students think about policing. It’s a great career,” she said.

“The campaign provides a sneak peek of what it’s like to be a police officer. What you will see is endless opportunities.

“You will see that policing certainly isn’t boring and what you will also see is our police officers have a real passion and pride for policing.

Police and Emergency Service Minister Felix Ellis said the government was on track to lifting police numbers to a record strength of 1449 by 2026 – a 31 per cent increase since 2014.
