TASMANIA Police has welcomed 19 new officers to its squad following the latest round of graduations.
The constables – seven women and 12 men – will take up their posts at stations in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie.
The average age of new recruits was 28, with 20-year-old Josh McCarthy the youngest and 42-year-old Mardi Ditcham the oldest among the group.
Mr McCarthy, of Hobart, said the eight-month training course was challenging but rewarding.
“I was unsure what I wanted to do in college but I spoke with a police officer and he convinced me joining the force was a good path to take,” he said.
“It was definitely challenging but I overcame all the obstacles that were thrown my way and it was good to prove myself past my young age.
“I’m really looking forward to the diversity of the job.”
Police Commissioner Darren Hine congratulated all the recruits for successfully completing their training.
“They should all be very proud of what they have achieved,” Mr Hine said.
“We hope that they enjoy long and fulfilling careers dedicated to the Tasmanian
community. The career of a police officer is rewarding and varied, and we wish our
new graduates well as they forge their own paths within the service.”
Alice Herbert, 26, was top of the class and 35-year-old Martin Wilson placed runner-up.
During the election the State Government committed to recruiting an extra 125 frontline police officers over the next four years.
The next training course kicks off in September.
