THE owner of a Southern Tasmanian hair salon as been named as the best in Tasmania by voters in the Mercury’s Best Hair Salon and Hairdresser poll.

Voting in the poll was extended before Melissa Polley from Natural Hair and Now came out on top.

Ms Polley said the timing of the vote of confidence could not have been better with plans to open a new salon in Cygnet coming together.

Natural Hair and Now already operates in Blackmans Bay and Kingston Beach and Ms Polley hopes to open the doors of her new venture in Cygnet in February.

“My first salon was under my house,’ Ms Polley said.

“So to be opening a new space and being named the best hairdresser in the State is a real thrill.

“I knew the salons were well regarded but to be personally recognised is very special.”

Ms Polley has been cutting and styling hair for more than 20 years but went out on her own four years ago.

Ms Polley was in competition with a wide variety of businesses from around Tasmania including home salons to inner-city businesses.

Second place-getter Marisa Bain was initially in first place before the poll was extended and said she was proud of the achievement.

“I’m a small-business owner who works by myself and have only recently returned from maternity leave after having twins four months ago,’’ she said.

“I am grateful that I have a huge network of wonderful clients and an extremely supportive husband making this all possible.”
