Police thank public who rushed to help in fatal crash at Blackmans Bay

A tragic peak-hour crash has claimed the lives of a 42-year-old father and his two-year-old daughter in an incident described as “a traumatic scene” that will “shake the whole community”.

A TRAGIC peak-hour crash has claimed the lives of a 42-year-old Huntingfield father and his two-year-old daughter in an incident described as “a traumatic scene” that will “shake the whole community”.

The two-vehicle collision on Algona Rd, 900m south of the Fork in the Road roundabout at Kingston, happened at 8.40am on Thursday when a bus and a black sedan collided head-on.

The driver of the white 1998 Hino passenger bus, a 68-year-old-woman from Blackmans Bay, was the sole occupant and was taken to Royal Hobart hospital with non-life-threatening injuries but sadly, the two occupants of the black Lexus sedan were killed.

Traffic was stopped on the road shortly after the incident and remained closed until just before 6pm.

Kingston Police Inspector Jason Elmer said members of the public rushed to help, praising them for their efforts.

“It’s a traumatic scene, for people to come forward and help, we really appreciate the assistance that was provided,” he said at the scene.

“It’s incredibly difficult for emergency services people who turn up and have to deal with these scenes, and members of the public who turn up to these scenes.”

Two other vehicles were caught up in the collision but the occupants were not badly injured.

“The driver of the bus was taken through to the Royal Hobart Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a female driver of one of the other vehicles was also taken for assessment,” Insp Elmer said.

A statement from Tasmania Police last night detailing the initial investigations of the incident suggested the bus applied its brakes suddenly in the north bound lane.

“Steering input and the camber (slope) of the road has caused the bus to rotate clockwise with the front of the bus crossing into the south bound lane where the impact has occurred,” the statement read.

Acting Sergeant Adam Hall at Southern Crash Investigation Services said excessive speed, alcohol or drugs did not appear to be contributing circumstances.

“Investigations are continuing as to why the impact between the two vehicles has occurred,” he said.

Crash investigation police were tasked to the scene and used a drone to re-create the accident. Kingborough Mayor Dean Winter issued his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those involved in the accident.

“This will shake the whole Blackmans Bay and broader Kingborough Community,” he said.

“It is hard to imagine what the extended family and friends will be going through.

“Our thoughts are with everyone involved.”

EARLIER, 8.30PM, AUGUST 13: TASMANIA Police have released more detail surrounding the tragic death of a 42-year-old male and a two-year-old girl from Huntingfield who died following a two-vehicle crash on Algona Road at Kingston.

The crash occurred at approximately 8.40am after a white 1998 Hino bus travelling North being driven by a 68-year-old female from Blackmans Bay collided with a south bound black 2006 Lexus which was being driven by the deceased.

A statement from Tasmania Police said initial investigations suggested the bus has applied emergency braking in the north bound lane.

“Steering input and the camber (slope) of the road has caused the bus to rotate clockwise with the front of the bus crossing into the south bound lane where the impact has occurred,” it read

According to police, the female in the bus was removed by emergency services personnel and taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

There she underwent mandatory testing for drugs and alcohol.

Acting Sergeant Adam hall said excessive speed, or alcohol or drugs use is not suspected as contributing factors.

“Investigations are continuing as to why the impact between the two vehicles has occurred.” Acting Sergeant Hall said.

Police, Ambulance Tasmania, and TFS were all required at the scene which was closed for about eight hours.

Police are asking for anyone who observed the vehicles prior to the collision or who has any dashcam footage is contact Acting Sergeant Adam Hall at Southern Crash Investigation Services on 131444 or by contacting Crime Stoppers.

Tasmania Police expressed their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

UPDATE, 6PM: TASMANIA Police have confirmed Algona Road, Kingston is now open after the earlier fatal crash which killed a Kingborough father and his daughter.

EARLIER, 4.30PM: Police have confirmed the relationship of the two people killed in this morning’s tragic crash on Algona Rd as a father and his daughter.

“Sadly police can advise it was a 42-year-old man and his young daughter from the Kingborough area that died in the crash on Algona Road this morning,” a Tasmania police spokesperson said.

“Algona Road remains closed with Crash Investigators at the scene.”

The spokesperson said further details will be released when the scene examination has been completed.

EARLIER, 2PM: The scene around this morning’s fatal collision is expected to be closed for the next three hours, Tasmania Police have said.

The tragic head-on crash on Algona Rd happened just after 8.35am this morning when a black sedan and a bus travelling in opposite directions collided.

A man and a young girl — believed to be a father and his daughter — died at the scene.

Two other vehicles were also involved in the crash and the bus driver has been taken to Royal Hobart Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

EARLIER, 12.17PM: A horrific head-on crash between a bus and a black sedan has claimed two lives this morning.

Kingston Police Inspector Jason Elmer said the crash happened just after 8.35am on Algona Rd, Blackmans Bay, with members of the public rushing to help.

“As a result of that collision, the sedan then collided with another two vehicles that were also travelling north on Algona Rd.

“Tragically, as a result of the collision, the male driver and the female child rear seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.”

Insp Elmer could not provide any further information about the age or relationship between the man and child.

Members of the public were quick to help, before police arriving.

“It’s a traumatic scene, for people to come forward and help, we really appreciate the assistance that was provided,” Insp Elmer said.

“It’s incredibly difficult to emergency services people who turn up and have to deal with these scenes, and members of the public who turn up to these scenes.”

Other drivers involved in the crash did not receive life-threatening injuries.

“The driver of the bus was taken through to the Royal Hobart Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, and a female driver of one of the other vehicles was also taken for assessment,” Insp Elmer said.

Crash investigation police remain on scene and will employ a drone to recreate the accident. The road is expected to remain blocked until this afternoon.

EARLIER, 10.36AM: A man and a child have been killed in a tragic accident in Blackmans Bay this morning.

A Tasmania Police spokeswoman confirmed the death of the two people who were travelling in a car at the time.

The crash involved a private bus, which had no passengers.The female driver of the bus has been taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Three cars and a bus were involved in the accident.

Police say Algona Rd will remain blocked from the Fork in the Road for several hours.

EARLIER, 9.49AM: A bus has veered off the road on Algona Rd, Blackmans Bay.

A woman, who was involved in the crash but luckily uninjured described following the bus at about 8.30am, travelling towards the Channel Hwy from Blackmans Bay.

She said the bus appeared to veer across the road and into the barrier.

“I’m still very shaken,” she said.

She described an oncoming black vehicle which clipped her car before colliding with another vehicle.
