THE first stage of Mona’s DarkLab project for the Huon Valley has been announced, a cacophonous chorus of 2000 ravens in the forests of southern Tasmania to unfold in line with Dark Mofo.
The ravens are part of Project X, a 12-month vision that will include a major public art venture for the region that was impacted by the bushfires this year.
It has been supported by the state and federal governments with a combined $2 million.
The first installation announced is by English musician Chris Watson titled Hrafn: Conversations with Odin.
Beginning on June 12, groups will walk through the Hastings Caves State Reserve at dusk where speakers hidden in the trees will sound the roosting of 2000 ravens, in an experience not commonly experienced by humans.

Visitors will be taken to the site via a bus that departs from Hobart’s Brooke St Pier.
The experience and the bus transfer will cost $55. Hrafn: Conversations with Odin will continue for three months.
The artist first came to Tasmania about 18 months ago where the forests inspired him to work on a project that would lure people back into the region.
“You have a remarkable acoustic to your forest, and spending time in those places is very important,” Watson said.
“This will hopefully take people from all over the world back into your forest.”
Hrafn: Conversations with Odin is the first of a number of installations to be rolled out in the Huon Valley region over the next 12 months to help regenerate the area.
DarkLab creative director Leigh Carmichael said he could not give more details on what else will be involved in Project X.
He said there was going to be an exciting announcement later in the year.
