Tasmania’s Transport Minister says he’s open to giving Metro “tougher powers” to deal with anti-social behaviour on buses.
Michael Ferguson’s comments follow further bus cancellations in Hobart.
There were 78 services cancelled across Hobart on Wednesday and 88 have been cancelled today.
“I understand Metro management is taking action to recruit more drivers and assist its workforce with anti-social behaviour,” Mr Ferguson said.
“I have told my department to support Metro with anti-social behaviour measures. Overwhelmingly most passengers are excellent, however it’s disgusting how a small number of people are treating our drivers and other users. If my department and Metro request tougher powers the government will provide whatever is needed.”
Cancelled services have become a daily occurrence lately due to difficulty retaining and hiring bus drivers.
While Metro Tasmania says driver recruiting is a nationwide challenge, bad passenger behaviour has been cited as a reason for some drivers leaving.
Current and former drivers have spoken out recently about the stress causes by incidents including rock throwing, violence on buses and incidents of drivers being spat on and abused.
Former driver Kara Browning said Tasmania needed to employ transit police and allow drivers not to pick up youths known to be violent.
The state opposition called on the state government to better support Metro.
