Man dead after alleged fight in St Marys, Fingal Valley man, 57, charged with murder

Police have charged a 57-year-old St Marys man with murder after the death of another man in the Fingal Valley town, in the state’s North East.

Police were called to the main street of St Marys on Tuesday about 6.30pm, responding to reports of an altercation between the two men.

A 65-year-old Fingal Valley man, died after the alleged fight. Police believe the two were known to each other.

Detectives have not been able to reveal any detail about how the incident unfolded.

Earlier in the day police described how the alleged victim was found unconscious and unresponsive.

“Members of the public, including a volunteer ambulance officer, responded and provided CPR until other emergency services arrived,” Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Rob King said.

“Unfortunately the unconscious male later died as a result of injuries believed to be sustained through that incident.”

The alleged offender was taken into police custody.

“The person who was taken into custody was located within a couple of hundred metres, within about half an hour,” he Inspector King said.

Police have since charged the 57-year-old with murder and he has been detained to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.

Police said the man in custody did not receive medical treatment.

“We’re exploring what gave rise to the [alleged] dispute,” Inspector King said.

“There’s nothing to indicate there were any other parties involved.

“Police would like to speak to any person who does have information or witnessed the incident.”
