A MAN has been arrested after he attempted to steal a police officer’s gun at Royal Hobart Hospital.

Terrified onlookers in Royal Hobart Hospital emergency waiting room could only watch on this morning as a 39-year-old man approached the police officer from behind and attempted to grab the officer’s firearm from the holster.

About 9.30am, the police officer was standing at the triage desk at the Royal Hobart Hospital for routine duties when the incident happened.

A Tasmania Police spokesman said police immediately placed the man under arrest.

“At no stage did the man take control of the firearm, and no person was injured during the incident,” he said.

“I would like to reassure everyone who was in the waiting room and triage area of the

hospital that police always had control of the situation and there was no risk to their

safety.”

Police are questioning the man in relation to the incident and a number of unrelated stealing complaints.
