‘TRAGIC’: Man killed in annual dirt bike event

A TRAIL bike rider who was killed following a crash on a West Coast beach on Sunday was part of an annual mega dirt bike event.

Tasmania Police have confirmed the man, in his 30s, was part of the “best ride ever” the St Helens to Strahan event.

After spending the night at Cradle Mountain the riders set off for Strahan where they descended on Ocean Beach.

It is understood the rider hit a buried log as he rode along the sand.

Despite the best efforts from his mates and emergency services, a man was announced dead at the scene.

According to Tasmania Police, the alarm was raised just after 3pm that the man had been found semiconscious on the Beach.

Other members of his riding party returned to look for him when he failed to make it to the beach’s exit.

After initial investigations, Senior Sergeant Adam Spencer of West Coast Police said the North West man, in his 30s, was riding a trail bike north on Ocean Beach when it appeared he struck a buried log.

“The bike remained upright for some distance afterwards, but eventually it did come to rest on its side,” he said.

“The man was found semiconscious with his bike a very short time later.”

The Senior Sergeant said another rider went to Trial Harbour to raise the alarm, while another activated his Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) at the scene of the incident and the Tasmania Police Westpac Rescue Helicopter was deployed shortly after.

“Police and Ambulance Tasmania four-wheel drives moved quickly to Ocean Beach and found

the man’s peers performing CPR,” Senior Sergeant Spencer said.

Despite efforts by his fellow riders and paramedics, he died at the scene.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with his family,” Senior Sergeant Spencer said.

Tasmania police are investigating the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
