As Australians struggle to get enough shut-eye, a Hobart hotel is hoping to influence sleeping habits with a creative campaign - one which could give them a much needed push during a sleepy bookings season.

Hobart’s MACq 01 is launching the Pay By Sleep Slumber Suite, which could mean a free night’s stay at the hotel - the catch is guests will need to get a restful slumber of more than six hours a night.

The offer is open to travellers who book a slumber suite for a two night stay between now and the end of September.

On the first night of their stay, sleep will be monitored, and for every hour over six, $100 will be knocked off the bill, with a maximum of $300.

“It’s a seamless integration with the room that won’t require guests to lift a finger,” MACq 01 marketing lead Danika Porter said.

“A sophisticated sleep analyser will be placed under the mattress, which monitors the time and quality of the guest sleep.

“This syncs with the mobile app so that we can see how rested our guests are and the MACq 01 team can reduce their nightly bill accordingly.”

The sleep suite is decked out with all the essentials for a good night’s sleep, including a weighted blanket, sleepy teas and lavender.

Sleep expert Shea Morrison, who helped modify the room, said many Australians weren’t getting enough sleep.

“The more recent research is that 4 in 10 Australians are using prescription or natural medication to get to sleep,” she said.

“Most Australians are feeling the pressures that are really contributing to the level of stress, they’re finding it hard to get to sleep or stay sleep.

‘7-9 hours is the ideal for adults when it comes to getting enough sleep.”

Ms Morrison said the room changes would help influence a better night’s sleep.

“It’s really getting into all of the senses so we’ve got smell sights, sounds and smells to really help people get into the spot where they can feel rested,” she said.

“We’ve adjusted the lighting to create that beautiful cocoon and feel well rested.”

Meanwhile Ms Porter said the innovative campaign would help the hotel during months with lower occupancy

“We are anticipating a softer winter in whole than last year,” she said.

“Winter events such as Dark Mofo, Festival of Voices and Beaker Street Festival are a great reason to visit Tasmania over the traditionally quieter months.”
