L-plate drivers must not leave their municipality, authorities say

Coronavirus: Social distancing around the world

LEARNER drivers can continue with their driving education, but there’s a catch.

Parents and guardians can continue supervising their L-platers, the State Government says, but they must not leave their municipality.

Transport Minister Michael Ferguson confirmed that supervisory drivers won’t be fined if they abide by the rules.

It comes after Victoria Police fined a 17-year-old learner driver for not following directions to stay at home.

The fine was later overturned.

“Learner driving is considered a learning activity,” Mr Ferguson said.

“If you are supervising a learner driver, you must adhere to the rules. Only drive within your municipality, and only stop if you are getting essential supplies.

“If you do not have an essential reason to stop anywhere, you should not exit the vehicle while out and about.

“Our message is clear, no one should be visiting outside their region or be away from their home without an essential reason. We all need to be sensible and help reduce the threat posed by COVID-19.”
