STEVE Wass looks set to be returned as Kingborough Mayor with another low voter turnout likely to favour the incumbent.

As of yesterday, only 53.98 per cent of Kingborough residents had returned their ballot papers.

Rates, the future of Kingston Park and attracting more jobs to the region have been key issues that have dominated the campaign.

Cr Wass is looking to hold onto the mantle while councillors Richard Atkinson, Flora Fox and Dean Winter are jockeying to replace him.

Cr Winter, whose campaign relied heavily on getting younger people out to vote, said the return rate did not bode well but he had not given up.

“I have no idea how it’s going to turn out,” he said.

Cr Wass said felt confident of getting back on the council but wasn’t ready to declare victory in the mayoral race.

There are 18 candidates overall competing for the 10 seats around the council table.
