On one of the most significant days in the calendar year for the Australian Army, the Chief chose to spend the day in Tasmania.

The Chief of Army Simon Stuart celebrated Army’s 122nd birthday in Hobart, meeting with Tasmanian-based personnel at Anglesea Barracks and Derwent Barracks.

Lieutenant General Simon Stuart said he specifically wanted to be in Tasmania on the special occasion.

“I chose to be here because of Tasmania’s proud history of service and the more than 500 phenomenal Tasmanians that are serving in our army today,” Lieutenant General Stuart said.

“I want to make sure that we are getting more Tasmanians into our army because they make fantastic soldiers and I want to connect Tasmania with the future of the Australian Army.”

Lieutenant General Stuart said Tasmania has the highest per capita representation in the country for part-time service and recognised the high-quality people from here.

“Out of the 101 Victorian Crosses that have been awarded, 15 are Tasmanian including the most recent Corporal Cameron Baird who was killed in action Afghanistan in 2014.

“Four of the current serving Major Generals in our army including Major General Natasha Fox who’s our deputy Chief of Army are born and bred here in Tasmania.”

Lieutenant General Stuart said they had invested in the future of the army in Tasmania, with releasing the latest generation of night vision with the Hawkei protected mobility vehicle to be deployed in a few month’s time.
