A re-elected Liberal government would build a $15m medical precinct in the Huon Valley, Premier Jeremy Rockliff announced on Tuesday.
Mr Rockliff visited Huonville just four days before voters go to the polls to announce a significant upgrade for health services in the soother municipality.
He said the new precinct would will deliver 100 per cent bulk-billed GP appointments, after-hours and weekend services and the government would fund a nurse practice manager, reception and administrative staff.
Mr Rockliff said that boosting regional health infrastructure was a key focus for the Liberals.
“By investing in primary health care such as GP services, such as mental health support for the community, such as dental services for the community, you are alleviating the pressure of our acute care services in the major centers,” he said.
“We recognise that rural and regional areas increasingly have found it difficult to attain GP services, which is why we have continually stepped in and supported rural and regional Tasmania to maintain those services.”
The precinct will include a Mental Health Hub to help address the large unmet need in the local community, Mr Rockliff said.
Huon Valley Council CEO Lachlan Kranz welcomed the announcement.
“We look forward to working with whichever party forms the next government to make sure the best outcomes are delivered for our community.
“The guaranteed access to bulk-billing GPs, expanded mental health services, and dedicated staff will have a real and positive impact on the wellbeing of people in the Huon Valley.”
Mr Rockliff also pledged a re-elected Liberal Government would partner with the Royal Flying Doctor Service to deliver a fully equipped dental clinic at the Dover Medical Centre.
The $150,000 clinic would feature state-of-the-art dental equipment, including a dental chair, an X-ray machine, sterilisation units and other essential instruments, Mr Rockliff said.
The new pledge is one of a number for the area, the Liberals have also promised $1 million to upgrade Dover Medical Centre, and building two new ambulance stations at Snug and Cygnet.
Labor has pledged one of its TassieDoc bulkbilling clinics for the Huon Valley, should it win power on Saturday.
Shadow health minister Ella Haddad said the Liberals had had more than a decade to boost primary health care.
“After 11 years of doing next to nothing while Tasmanians waited to see a doctor for free, the Liberals have confirmed they are making it up as they go. Tasmania needs a fresh start, with a fresh government,” she said.
“The best way to make that happen is to vote Labor.”
