GUILFORD Young College students breathed a sigh of relief to learn COVID-19 hadn’t stolen their Leavers Dinner dreams, with a night of delicious food, red carpet glamour and specially permitted dancing.

Friends Grace Pretyman, 18, and Maddie Short, 18, were waiting through the “stressful” year with bated breath to see if their Year 12 Formal would go ahead.

“We weren’t sure what kind of formal we would get,” Ms Pretyman said.

Ms Short said her Leavers Dinner look was very last minute, but her favourite part of the evening was seeing what everyone wore at the Elwick Functions centre.

“We wouldn’t have been able to do this six months ago, so it’s really special,” Ms Short said.

The girls’ best advice for attending a formal was don’t stress over what to wear.

“You’re going to look great anyway so don’t worry,” Ms Pretyman said.

The colourful and glitzy sea of students was greeted by proud parents and teachers.

Guilford Young College director of organisation Blair Brownless said the event was a chance to celebrate after a challenging year, and a long 13 years of schooling.

“We wanted to make a big deal out of the entrance so we’ve refined the red carpet this year,” he said.

“This is one of the few events in Tasmania where people are allowed on the dancefloor because the Department of Education and Catholic Education made an exemption to dance.”

Mr Brownless’s key advice was to enjoy the grand arrival, take plenty of photos and hop on the dancefloor early.

Student leaders Amie Myhowycz and Will Heddle, 18, colour co-ordinated their respective deep blue dress and tie for the event, but were most excited for the food.

“We were both on top of helping to plan the event,” Ms Myhowycz said.

“It’s very exciting.”
