ANOTHER popular University of Tasmania eatery has closed, with Lazenbys at the Sandy Bay campus shutting its doors on Tuesday.
It comes after the The Ref ceased operating before the pandemic last year, a closure which was revealed to be permanent last month.
Executive Director of Infrastructure Services and Development at the University of Tasmania Mike Hunnibell said the closure was part of the catering overhaul at the university.
“Under the new model, we change from a sole, out-of-state corporate provider delivering all food and drink offerings across our campuses to having multiple Tasmanian operators,” Mr Hunnibell said.
Lazenbys has operated with Compass Group since 2011.
The University’s contract with the group runs until the 2nd of July.
“The staff at Lazenby’s rightly have a warm place in the hearts of many members of our community and we wish them well in the future,” Mr Hunnibell said.
“We are however, looking forward to having a strong, local food and drink offering on our campuses.”
Mr Hunnibell said multiple vendors would being operating in existing outlets.
“These include Lazenby’s, Green’s Kiosk and the Trade Table on Sandy Bay, the Arts cafe in Hunter Street, The Walk at Newnham and new cafes at Inveresk and West Park – along with food vans and pop-up food stalls.”
Mr Hunnibell said new arrangements would be finalised ahead of semester two and that food and coffee vans would operate on campus during the semester break.
