A Tasmanian Labor government would begin recruiting for a nurse practitioner in all 18 of the state’s regional hospitals, Opposition Leader Dean Winter has promised.
Speaking at Ochre Health Medical Centre with Labor health spokesperson, Ella Haddad, Mr Winter said the “nurse-first” regional clinics would operate like urgent care centres, with nurse practitioners backed by a team of allied health professionals.
Ms Haddad said Labor would begin rolling out the clinics in its first year of government, with priority locations to be chosen in consultation with local communities.
“After 11 years of Liberal neglect, we have 18 regional hospitals across Tasmania that are under-utilised – it’s time for a fresh start,” Ms Haddad said.
“A Dean Winter Labor government will activate these valuable facilities and put a nurse-led clinic in every regional hospital across Tasmania – and deliver faster, more accessible care to regional communities.
“This initiative will mean that the treatment of sports injuries, stitches, and assessments of sick kids, as well as routine health services can all happen in local communities, rather than in our overcrowded major hospitals – making healthcare more accessible to Tasmanians living in regional centres.”
Ms Haddad said Labor would also provide $1 million each year to allied health outreach services such as physiotherapists and dietitians, and expand prenatal checks to support women and families locally.
The 18 local health facilities are located in Beaconsfield, Flinders Island, George Town, King Island, the West Coast, Smithton, Scottsdale, New Norfolk, Oatlands, Campbell Town, the Tasman Peninsula, St Helens, St Marys, Swansea, Deloraine, Longford, the Huon, and Dover.
