SINGER-SONGWRITER turned “huge foodie”, Ella Hooper can’t wait to soak up all the Taste has to offer when she rings in the New Year on stage tonight.
The Killing Heidi frontwoman will form part of a 10-piece big band performing at the Taste of Tasmania’s New Year’s Eve Speakeasy Ball on Hobart’s waterfront.
Hooper will take to the stage alongside some of the big names in Australian music including Tex Perkins (The Cruel Sea) and Mojo Juju for a performance of classic pop tunes and jazz numbers.
Taking on a style of music foreign to Killing Heidi’s early grunge sound, which saw the group’s 2000 debut album Reflector win four ARIA awards, Hooper admitted tonight’s “jazz-flavour” show is a step into the unknown for the acclaimed artist.
“As you get older you enjoy diversifying otherwise you feel yourself becoming a bit stale,” she said.
“For me it’s about putting myself out of my comfort zone and it’s also a good chance to dress up and have fun.
“I’m so excited to take to the stage in Hobart. It’s always so enjoyable coming down here to play.”
There are still general admission and waterfront seating tickets available for tonight’s event. They can be purchased either at the door or online at tasteoftasmania.com.au/nye
Taste organisers said they expect about 6000 people at the ball.
Hooper said she has been enjoying working on a range of music projects in addition to Killing Heidi, which began touring again in 2016 after a 10-year hiatus.
“I’m doing a lot more collaboration work which is great because it brings so much into your own artistic canon,” she said.
“I look for these opportunities as much as possible and I’m looking forward to it at the Taste as it’s something I’ve never done with a big band like that.”
Hooper said she is enjoying her Tasmanian visit and can’t wait to enjoy the state’s top food on offer at the Taste.
She revealed a Killing Heidi Hobart show is earmarked for mid-2019.
