AUSTRALIAN indie-folk royalty Angus and Julia Stone are headlining SummerSalt in Hobart tonight at a gig which will be extra special for one half of the duo, who now calls the Apple Isle home.
Julia Stone officially relocated to Tasmania last October, she told the Mercury. After visiting her mother here early 2021, she met her now partner and decided to make the move permanent.
“Life is so unpredictable,” she said.
“I didn’t plan to be living in Hobart but here I am and I really couldn’t be happier. It’s so beautiful.”
Despite being here for a short period of time, Stone is embracing the state and all it has to offer, making her way up the east coast visiting the likes of Coles Bay and most recently took on a ten day rafting adventure on the Franklin River.
“It was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life, I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was,” she said.
Having performed as part of SummerSalt in previous years, the brother and sister duo are no strangers to the festival, however their performance in Hobart will be extra significant for Stone who says she has “amassed an extended family” in Tassie.
“Tomorrow’s going to be pretty special. I’ve got my partner’s family coming, and of course my mum and stepdad,” she said on Thursday.
Stone said meeting Grammy award-winning artist Ben Harper who is also performing as part of the festival felt like a “full circle” moment.
“We were so nervous to meet him. We grew up listening to his music,” she told the Mercury, humbly.
“The first song Angus taught me on the guitar was Walk Away.”
Ben Harper, Angus and Julia Stone, City and Colour, The Rubens and Alex the Astronaut all performed at the Royal Botanic Garden Friday 3 Feb.
